Sevillian Traditions

Christmas in Seville preserves traditions deeply rooted in the city’s history and identity. Nativity scenes and convent-made sweets are two of its most authentic expressions.

Throughout December, churches and institutions often open their doors to display carefully crafted nativity scenes. Some of the best-known displays can be found at Fundación Cajasol and Círculo Mercantil, with others dotted throughout the historic centre and Triana.

Food also takes centre stage with traditional sweets made in convents: mantecados and polvorones, two varieties of crumbly shortbread, as well as marzipan and yemas, sweet egg-yolk confections. A special showcase is usually held at the Real Alcázar during the Immaculate Conception holiday period in early December.
